And so it begins…
It’s amazing how daunting it is to put yourself out there, among the masses, just waiting for ridicule. Or so it seems.
To the contrary, I’ve been met with a host of wonderful cheerleaders offering support and encouragement on my journey to express ideas, feelings and attitudes through images.
I first took up a camera in high school, my dad’s to be exact. Armed with this wonderful tool I headed off into the world of photography. I took pictures for the year book and floated around the school capturing random events as they unfolded. I spent hours waiting for the sun to cast it’s beams on a fence post, watched the light fall away into evening, bidding a colourful farewell to the day, and spent hours creating abstract scenes using candles and pipe cleaners - yup, you heard it here first folks!
It’s amazing how photography can make you look at the world in a different way. Taking the time to really see the world lends a whole new perspective. It calms the mind and soothes the soul.
My first photo shoot was held at that very school with the library as a backdrop. I had a very particular client - and very good friend - as my first subject. He’s passed away since, and I still treasure this particular memory of him the most. People connect inexplicably when they allow their guard to fall away and show the world (or the photographer) who they are. It’s remarkable.
While I’ve continued to take pictures personally, life unfolded and time spent with my photography diminished as so many things do when you’re young and busy trying to figure out what this world is all about. I fell away from taking the time to really absorb the scene, consider what I wanted to say about it and then attempt to capture it with the click of a shutter.
Over the past year I’ve come full circle. The passion has been reignited and I couldn’t be happier.
I hope you take the time to adventure with me. I aim to share my journey and hope you come along for the ride.
The best is yet to come!
